Breadwinner
fall through the skylight
Watching the sky light up
in the morning.
I hear you get out of bed
The blankets over my head
Trying to go back in time
The sun crawls over the roof
And I never started to move
It stared in on me for a while
making shadows stretch out
for a mile, Then it left
Dragging it’s cape behind it
from blue to red to violet
When I hear the
door latch click
I have to pretend I was sick
so you’ll crawl into bed
Your hair smells like winter
your coat smells like rush hour
But your breath is as
sweet as springtime
As you hang up your costume
and turn out the light
There’s one shaft of silver
still shimmering bright
Your feet tickle mine as you
whisper goodnight
Now I’m back watching moonbeams
fall through the skylight
All night
